On the afternoon of October 7, one of our Care A Van drivers, Jonathan Estigoy, might very well have saved a life, thanks to the CPR/First Aid training provided by our very own Michael Hunter.
On that Friday Johanthan had just picked up a rider at Safeway. As he was leaving the parking lot, he noticed a commotion near a car parked in the lot. As he approached the area, he saw several people standing around the car, and one woman very near the car frantically waving her arms and another woman crying hysterically.
Jonathan stopped and rushed over to the scene. He found a man slumped back in the driver seat of the car unresponsive. As others stood around, not knowing what to do or afraid to become involved, and as one of the two women pleaded, “Please help us, please help us,” he quickly assessed the situation, dashed back to his vehicle, and called the Care A Van dispatcher, asking him to call 911 immediately to send an ambulance to the scene.
As the dispatcher began asking him a question, Jonathon replied, “I don’t have time to talk right now,” and rushed back to the man in the car. He informed bystanders that he was CPR trained and told one of the women that he needed her help to get the man out of the car. Together they did so. He checked for signs of life and then began CPR. Within a minute the man showed signs of life, and he ceased CPR. At that time, the ambulance arrived, and paramedics took over the situation.
Thank you, Jonathon for taking the time to be trained in CPR/First Aid and therefore to have the courage and the confidence to respond to the emergency when others did not. Thank you, Michael Hunter for the training you provided Jonathon and many, many others working here at CCS.
Who knows what would have happened had Jonathon not responded as he did. Perhaps there is a bit of a hero in all of us; certainly there was in Jonathon on that particular day.
