Hospice & Home Care Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers help keep our doors open. If you have time, energy, skills, and services (or any of the above), please consider volunteering with us. There are three primary roles volunteers play for the Hospice and Home Care of Juneau (HHCJ):

Special Project Volunteers

Special Projects Volunteers help keep the program running smoothly and help keep the doors open in our office and in the client’s homes. Opportunities include keeping our library up to date, working on the equipment in the loan closet, answering the telephone during team meetings, building ramps for wheelchairs at client homes, typical office work such as shredding papers and organizing supplies. We also use volunteers to help with our major fundraising efforts: Light Up A Life (November-December), Heart of Hospice Run (March-April), and Whale Watching Cruise (April-May)

In-home Hospice Volunteers

Community volunteers play a vital role in our provision of patient care for our hospice patients. Some people choose to assist the family by provide respite care, sitting with a loved one while the family runs errands or simply gets some sleep for a few hours. Others cook meals to take into the home, or grocery shop for the family. Specially trained volunteers may provide Vigil Care at the bedside during the last hours of life.

Bereavement Support Volunteers

Some people have a gift for being able to walk with people through the period just prior to and immediately following a death. Our training helps hone these skills to allow persons to be present to others in a time of great need. Listening skills are essential, along with patience and compassion. Volunteers often accompany a person for a year by making contacts at critical points along the grieving process.

Volunteer Training:

All volunteers must go through a special HHCJ orientation and training. In home volunteers take additional training and bereavement volunteers complete additional training beyond the In-Home training before companioning with a bereaved person.

To apply as a volunteer for HHCJ please complete the application and return it to HHCJ.
